Evolution of a design

The Houston ColdFusion User Group is working on upgrading their website. They're going to use Matt Woodward's user group management app. I took it upon myself to work on the layout.

Seeing as I have little in the way of actual graphic or design skills I first went to Open Source Web Design and browsed around until I came across something I liked. I eventually settled on Cesar01.

I did a straight application of the design to the user group management app. The results came out like this:

Based on feedback of other members of the group, we decided we needed a picture of the Houston skyline for the header of the site. After searching around the web for a suitable royalty free image, and coming up empty, I put out a call to the rest of the HouCFUG. Selma Delgado was good enough to provide a graphic to use. (You rock Selma!) The next revision came out like this:

Based on still further feedback, I darkened the colors on the bars to match up more with the darker header image. I also moved the search function from the top of the screen to the left side navigation menu area. The final result looks like this:
