Wednesday - BOF - SciFi discussion

The SciFi Birds of a Feather meeting was fun. It was a long trek down several levels into the basement of the Grand Hyatt Washington Hotel but I think that made it that much more interesting.

Ray Camden hosted the session. It drew a large crowd (about 30 people or so) including a few of the more well known attendees like Mark Drew and Michael Dinowitz. Even Sean Corfield's wife was there.

Things started off with a discussion of Lost and the many plot twists the show has. Other topics touched upon were Dr. Who, Battle Star Galactica, Firefly, and some miscellaneous movies.

Then things took a strange turn into the comic book world when Michael Dinowitz and Mark Drew got into a discussion on dark comics and their content. I think part of that was my fault since we had been discussing watching Lost over the course of several years when it was broadcast or watching it in one sitting on DVD. I likened it to reading the Watchmen comic by Alan Moore. Reading it one installment a month over a year is a very different experience than reading the collected graphic novel in one sitting.

Ray brought the discussion back on topic and asked everyone what they were currently reading and what they would recommend to others. I'm currently finishing the Grey King by Susan Cooper (part of the Dark is Rising Sequence.) I would recommend anything by Ray Bradbury to others.

In all, it was a lot of fun. Nothing quite like a room of science fiction fans sitting around and talking about their favorite topic. It is certainly something that I think should be done again in the future.

Ray started a blog thread over at his blog. If you were at the SciFi BOF and haven't chimed in yet, go take a look. And for everyone else, go ahead and see if there are any recommend books that you might not have read.
